Mexico, November 7, 2005. The desolation left by Hurricane “Stan”
in the Mexican states of Veracruz, Oaxaca, and Chiapas has
reached extraordinary levels. Many organizations, foundations, and individuals who wish
to help are already working to reduce the damage and
trying to lessen the misfortune.
The Anahuac Telemedicine program, associated with
the Altius Foundation and the Anahuac Universities Network,
has also begun to send help. Mobile unit #2, stationed
in Acapulco, Guerrero, was relocated to the devastated area near
Tapachula, Chiapas.
This operation has been made possible thanks to the
support of Un Kilo de Ayuda (A Kilogram of Help),
another organization founded by graduates of educational institutions run by
the Legionaries of Christ. The organization has a hospital
in the high-altitude area of Tapachula, which was not affected
by the meteor. Most public hospitals in the region were
badly damaged.
Anahuac Telemedicine will support these districts with an emergency
and rescue team. The Telemedicine program, which makes use of
satellite links, will be able to offer specialized consultations that
link doctors in the mobile unit with medical specialists in
the Anahuac University and Nuestro Señora de la Piedad Hospital
in Acapulco.
Altius is responsible for operating the Anahuac Telemedicine program,
which has 4 mobile units in the state of Oaxaca,
2 in the state of Guerrero, and 2 in Jalisco.
These 8 mobile units care for and offer health and
sickness prevention services to marginalized communities. They annually provide over
48,0000 medical services to the most needy.
