"A book like this is a must-have for everyone"

Chicago, August 6, 2007. – Once in a while, people come along who totally redimension our idea of what it means to be generous and live life to the full. They break the mold and they do it with panache, humor, joy, and commitment.

And once in a while, they can be persuaded to write a book about their experience, their motivations, their struggles, and the wisdom they’ve gained along the way.

After 23 years of marriage, James and Kathleen Littleton have certainly broken the mold—19 times, to be exact. Their happy clan of 14 unique children (with 5 more in heaven) is a shining witness to what the word “family” can mean when a couple is ready to welcome the gift of life with open arms. And for those of us who are eager to learn from their experience, they have co-authored a new book: Better by the Dozen, Plus Two: Anecdotes and a Philosophy of Life from a Family of Sixteen, available for purchase at

Chapter titles include: How We Came to Be a Family, How We Came to Live our Faith, Hierarchy of Values, Marriage, Motherhood, Openness to Life, Miscarriage, Formation of Children, Called to Service, On the Cross, and Importance of Having a Sense of Humor.

A book like this is a must-have for everyone who has ever felt like they could use some insight from a family that got it right. With its mix of stories and reflection, it is an enjoyable and enlightening read.

“Here’s a family you

won’t forget. And reading about them will brighten your day and deepen your faith. I was blessed in meeting them because their three oldest girls attended or attend Ave Maria University—and we’re hoping the 11 younger siblings will follow in their footsteps!  You’ll find 16 reasons for being joyfully counter-cultural.”

Editor, Ignatius Press and Theologian

“For those looking to invite God not just to their wedding, but also into their marriage, this is a must read. The Littleton’s personal journey in striving to be open to God’s will, and then to live his will, offers the inspiration and tools to accomplish this in our own lives.”
