SportsLeader Football Team Wins First State Championship
Lexington Knights Storm the Field with a 49-7 Victory

January 04, 2008. Louisville, KY. It was a rainy Saturday in early December and the Lexington Knights were gearing up for the big state championship game against a team that had been undefeated (14-0) all season.

After a brief moment of prayer with Coach Bill Letton, the team was ready. They had been getting stronger all season, not only in football skills, but also in faith and virtue through their affiliation with SportsLeader, a Catholic virtues program that instills faith and morals into athletes through the spiritual leadership of their coaches.

The fruits of their hard work were not long in coming.

By halftime, the Lexington Knights had charged the field with a score of 35-0. By the opening minute of the fourth quarter, their lead was up to 49-0. Some of their players set national and state records, especially quarterback Corey Robinson, with 91 touchdown passes and a state record of 5,855 yards.

Fittingly enough, this impressive victory was won on December 8, the feast day of the Immaculate Conception. And it was played in Louisville, where the SportsLeader apostolate first began.

The game itself is described in an article entitled “Knights Go out with a Blowout” by Mike Fields in the Lexington Herald-Leader’s ( Sunday paper on December 9, 2007. The entire text of the article can be read at this link.

This game just goes to show that faith, virtue, and a hard work ethic have something to do with big victories—on the field and in life.
