The Legion of Christ was founded in 1941 in Mexico,
and the Regnum Christi Movement was founded in 1959.
The work that the Legion and Regnum Christi have done
in Mexico is considerable. It covers areas like: education, complete
pastoral care for the Mayan zone of the state of
Quintana Roo, services to the dioceses through programs like the
Full-time Lay Missionaries, evangelization missions, care for the most needy,
promotion of the family, youth formation, and the spreading of
Christian values and culture in society.

On January 3rd
of 1941, the apostolic school of the Missionaries of the
Sacred Heart of Jesus was founded in Mexico City. The Legion
of Christ was born in the state of Michoacán, with the
first group of 13 boys.
Thirteen years later, the
Legion set its first apostolic work in motion: the Cumbres
Institute, founded in 1954 in Mexico City. It was followed
by the foundation of Anahuac University on its provisional campus
in 1964; by the Irish Institute, also in Mexico City,
in 1966; and by the first Mano Amiga School, also
in 1966. In 1968, Anahuac University opened its doors on
its definitive campus in the Lomas de Tecamachalco area of
From that date on, the chronology of
events is too densely packed to record: it fills up
quickly with cities, names, apostolates… It seems that a volcano
of generosity exploded in the hearts of hundreds and thousands
of Mexican lay people. Thanks to them, Regnum Christi and
the Legion of Christ are now extended throughout the length
and breadth of the Mexican Republic. Not only have the
aforementioned schools and works grown and multiplied on the map
of the country, but new initiatives have sprung up in
the most varied fields of apostolate: youth, family, childhood, mass
media, evangelization, works of Christian charity for the needy, clubs
for adolescents, Youth for the Third Millennium and Missionary Families
for the Third Millennium; NET, School of the Faith, Full-time
Lay Missionaries, ANSPAC, Mexican Family, the Alpha & Omega clinics,
apostolic schools for the formation of minor seminarians… and since
the 1990s, there is now a novitiate in the city
Mexico continues to be the “pioneer”
country in the service that the Legion and Regnum Christi
wish to offer to the Church’s mission, which is the
same as Christ’s mission: to help extend his Kingdom for
the salvation of mankind.
