“Bioethics - A Humanistic Approach to Medicine” will be the
theme of an upcoming conference organized by Bioethicist Dr. Jeffrey
Thewes, MA, M.D.and Registered Nurse Maria Zott. The event takes
place on Thursday, September 23, 2010 from 6:30 to 9:15
pm at the Auburn Hills Marriott Pontiac at Centerpoint in
Pontiac, Michigan.
“We assembled this conference to focus on some
of the current key ethical issues facing healthcare professionals,” said
Dr. Thewes, who is an attending emergency room physician and
medical ethicist at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland in Pontiac, Michigan.
He will be speaking on the topic “Challenges in Human
Dignity with Health Care Reform” during the conference.
The keynote speaker will
be Fr. Joseph Tham, LC, M.D. and PhD. He is an assistant
professor at the School of Bioethics for Regina Apostolorum College
in Rome, Italy.

• Jennifer Miller, Executive Director of
Bioethics International in New York discussing “Challenges in Healthcare Regarding

Resource Allocations.” She is a leading expert in emergency preparedness,
resource allocation, and person-centered bioethics. A physicist by training, she
has served as an advisor on bioethics issues to organizations
including the American Medical Association, the International Association of Obstetricians
in Italy, US Environmental Protection Agency scientists, consulting firms, biotechnology
and pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, policy writers, the private sector and
the media.
• Professor Alberto Garcia, JD UNESCO Chair in Bioethics
and Human Rights, Rome, Italy, discussing “Stem Cell Facts Affecting
Human Dignity.”
• Dr. Miguel LisPlanells, MD and Vice Chief of
the Neurosurgery Department at Sinai Grace Hospital in Detroit, Michigan,
discussing “Ethical Challenges in End of Life Care.”
The attendance cost
is $30 for adults and $10 for students. Adults who
