October 7, 2010. Seoul, South Korea. From August 30 to September 5, a continental congress was held in Seoul on the missionary role of the lay people in the Church in Asia. The congress was organized jointly by the Pontifical Council for the Laity, the Korean Episcopal Conference’s Commission for the Laity, and South Korea’s National Council of the Laity. The theme was “Proclaim Christ in Asia Today.”

Many bishops from the main Asian dioceses and delegates from various movements and ecclesial organizations in 22 countries participated in the congress, along with Cardinal Stanislaw Rylko, president of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, and Bishop Josef Clemens, the council’s secretary.

Legionary Fathers Alexander Kim and Simon Chung represented the Regnum Christi Movement at the congress. Fr Alexander Kim also acted as a press correspondent for the English-speaking media during the event.

The congress began with a concelebrated Mass presided over by Cardinal

Rylko in the Myungdong cathedral in the archdiocese of Seoul. During the congress, participants attended formation seminars and round tables to share experiences of proclaiming the Gospel in the dioceses of Asia.

After the congress, Cardinal Rylko and Bishop Clemens visited the Legionary center in Seoul. During dinner, the cardinal showed interest in the Legion’s apostolic work in the South Korean capital, expressing his support for the general director and encouraging the Legionary community to continue contributing to the work of evangelization in Asia.
