Mérida, Mexico. February 22, 2011. This past January 31, the
territorial directors, assistants for religious life, and the superiors of
the formation and apostolate centers from the territories of Mexico
and Monterrey had a series of meetings with Fr Gianfranco
Ghirlanda, S.J., councilor of the papal delegate, at the Anáhuac
University of Mayab in Mérida, in the Mexican state of
Yucatán. On February 4, the superiors of the Atlanta, Brazil,
Chile, New York, and Venezuela territories met with him in
the same city.
The purpose of these meetings was to
present the process for revising the constitutions, and to inform
the superiors about the details of the territorial commission that
will assist in the process.
During the sessions, Fr Ghirlanda explained
the methodology that will be followed for revising the constitutions,
how the members of the territories will be grouped together,
how the discussion meetings will be held by communities, and
the functions of the central commission and territorial commissions. Bishop
Pedro Pablo Elizondo, LC, of the Cancún-Chetumal prelature, was also
present in the meetings.
Following Fr Ghirlanda’s presentation, the participants were
able to ask questions. After a Mass in the university
auditorium and lunch, the meetings continued.
On February 1, the participants
met again, this time in the Regnum Christi women’s section
center in Mérida. They read over the documents that had
been handed out for study, and then there was a
time for questions and discussion. Mass and another session of
questions by territories followed, each session led by its own
territorial director.
In this same context and with the same objective,
the territorial directors and superiors of formation and apostolate centers
from Europe met in Rome on January 28 with the
papal delegate, Cardinal Velasio De Paolis, and his councilors, Fr.
Gianfranco Ghirlanda, S.J., and Fr Agostino Montan, C.S.I. Bishop Brian
Farrell, LC, was also present at the final meetings.
