South Korea - Three principals of Oak Academies visited
Korea for a week in November, in order to develop
team work with Regnum Christi members in Korea and to
promote Oak International Academies for Korean students and parents.
There are 4 Oak programs in the US, offering
one year of English immersion for middle school students. Javier
Valenzuela of Oaklawn Academy (Wisconsin), Valerie McGovern of Overbrook Academy
(Rhode Island), and Patricia Cantú of Everest International Program (Michigan)
met with 60 prospective Korean families who are interested in
Catholic education in the US for their children.
spoke with current Oak parents to update them on their
children’s progress in school. The parents were glad to meet
the principals in person, as many of them had only
‘met’ long distance. Currently, six Korean boys are attending Oaklawn,
six girls are attending Overbrook, and one girl is attending
the Everest program in Michigan. To date, 87 Korean students
have attended Oak International Academies, either as full-year students or
for brief programs.

Meeting with the families –
both present families of Oak students and those who are
considering the program – helped the principals to understand the
strong interest in Korea for education abroad, and will hopefully
lead to even greater teamwork between the program directors and
RC members in Korea.
