New book released with the final writings of theologian Benedict Ashley

Benedict Ashley
Benedict Ashley O.P.

The final writings of renowned theologian Benedict Ashley, O.P. (1915-2013), are now available in the newly released book Healing for Freedom: A Christian Perspective on Personhood and Psychotherapy.  Ashley was a former faculty member of The Institute for the Psychological Sciences.

Published by the IPS Press, the academic press of the Institute for the Psychological Sciences, Ashley vividly demonstrates how a Christian notion of action, knowledge, love, and flourishing can integrate psychological models of healing at embodied, personal, and interpersonal levels.

Craig S. Titus, Ph.D., editor-in-chief of the IPS Press, said of this new publication, "Ashley´s Healing for Freedom is a culmination of his life´s work.  As a philosopher, bioethicist, and theologian, he has articulated a Catholic view of the human person with clarity.  He incites us forward toward the true liberty that includes not only a freedom from disease but also a freedom for full human flourishing, even ultimate beatitude."

Throughout the book, Ashley demonstrates how psychotherapeutic models of healing can be compatible with a Christian understanding of knowledge, love and action at many different levels.

Dedicated to IPS
Healing
co-founder and Academic Dean Emeritus, Gladys Sweeney, Ph.D., material from Healing for Freedom is currently being used in IPS classrooms because of its distinct integrative approach to psychology and the Catholic/Christian understanding of the human person.

The book is the fourth in “The Monograph Series” which publishes original scholarly works promoting studies in the broad field of the psychological sciences. The writings feature experts in psychology, philosophy, and religion who come together to advance understanding of what constitutes both the mental well-being and the spiritual flourishing of the human person.

Vitz, Ph.D.  This dynamic publication brings Catholic philosophical and theological moral thoughts into direct dialogue with the psychological sciences and aims to establish the basis for developing a common framework of understanding.
