Returning the Culture to God
Changing Hearts gets out the message to young people

Bracelets from Changing Hearts
More than 10,000 of these bracelets were distrubted from Changing Hearts at World Youth Day.

This past summer, thousands of young people joined Pope Francis in Rio de Janiero for World Youth Day, a tradition started by John Paul in the 1980s.

This year, the Changing Hearts apostolate took advantage of this gathering to spread its message of prayer to change the culture by distributing more than 10,000 bracelets to young people at the 2013 event in Brazil.  The apostolate also will be distributing prayer cards and other items to young people at a national conference this fall.

Changing Hearts is an ecumenical prayer and fasting project started in Greenfield, Indiana, just 3 1/2 years ago.  It has spread to all 50 states and more than 15 foreign countries.  “We are praying and fasting for God´s forgiveness,” said Kay Dodds, founder. “Our prayer describes our dilemma. We must change hearts and be courageous in speaking out.”

Kay said the young people who attended World Youth Day escorted by Regnum Christi and Legion of Christ chaperones from the diocese of Cincinnati and a group from New York City took the bracelets.  Apparently, she said it has become a tradition for young people to exchange items with each other as “take homes” from the event. “They were excited to be able to give them out,” said Kay of the bracelets containing the message “Return the culture to God” in English and Portuguese, and the apostolate’s website.
Changing Hearts was awarded a $2,500 grant from the Mary Cook Tippmann Foundation to cover the expenses for the giveaways.

“We opened a Twitter account -- @ChanginghrtsUS -- and sent out a ‘phone wave’ for 5 days during the recent Peter Claver Youth Convention in Indy,” she added. “And we are working on the next event,” she said, saying Changing Hearts representatives will be passing out the group’s prayer cards and other items at the upcoming National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis on November 21-23, 2013.
