Cardinal Velasio De Paolis to ordain 31 Legionaries of Christ on December 14, 2013

Deaconate Ordinations 2013

Rome, Italy -- On Saturday, December 14, Cardinal Velasio De Paolis, C.S. will ordain 31 Legionaries of Christ to the priesthood in the basilica of St John Lateran in Rome. Cardinal De Paolis is the papal delegate for the Legion of Christ and Regnum Christi.

The ceremony, which will be in Italian, can be viewed live at 10:00 AM (Rome time) on the website www.ordenaciones.legionariosdecristo.org

The 31 Legionaries to be ordained range from 30 to 35 years of age, and include 8 Americans and 1 Canadian. The other future priests come from Mexico (12), Brazil (3), Argentina (2), and Germany, France, Columbia and Chile, each with 1.

Their stories are collected in the book Con Olor a Oveja (The Smell of the Sheep), which can be read online in various languages (among them English and Spanish). The Smell of the Sheep will be available at www.ordenaciones.legionariosdecristo.org. on December 14.

Fr Joseph Burtka, LC - originally from Michigan - is now the superior of several of the soon-to-be ordained priests in Rome. He said, “The ordination of 31 of our brothers causes great joy and hope in each one of us. I knew some of them in the novitiate when they first began their path to the priesthood. It gives me a great deal of satisfaction to see how they have corresponded to God’s gift, and today draw near to the altar as priests.”

Fr Burtka added, “We all have to give a special thank

you to God and to their families for the support they’ve given these young men. We know that behind each priestly vocation there are the prayers of their parents, grandparents, and siblings. And this Saturday we will see how the Lord repays all those prayers.”

Some information about the new priests:

Three of the future priests are originally from San Diego, California: Fathers Zachary Dominguez, Nicholas Sheehy, and Nicholas Fisher.

Fr Matthew Schneider, from Calgary, Alberta, is involved in youth ministry and has a blog for young people: http://22catholic.com/

The youngest of the future priests is Fr Agustín Rangel, from Mexico, who is 30 years old. Before he joined the minor seminary in Mexico he was the junior national champion in swimming for two consecutive years, and was also a two-time junior national triathlon champion.

Fr François Garreau will be the first graduate of the Legion’s minor seminary in France to be ordained a priest.

Fr Alberto Carrara, from Padua, Italy, has a doctorate in medical biotechnology. His dissertation, which he defended with highest honors, is an experimental work on human oncogenic viruses.

Of the 31 future priests, 16 began their vocational discernment and formation in one of the Legion’s minor seminaries. The others entered the novitiate after completing high school, during their university studies, or after a professional career.
