Diocesan priests from around the country participated in the seventh
annual Spiritual Exercises for Priests, hosted by the Legionaries of
Christ in Cupertino, California, at Our Lady of Santa Clara
Retreat Center from January 13-17, 2014. This year’s preacher was
Fr. Dean Stasell LC, who serves the Los Angeles area.
retreat included daily conferences with reflections to facilitate a one-on-one
personal dialogue with Christ.
“The goal is to help the
priests get renewed, strengthened and revitalized in their vocation and
in love for the Church,” said Fr. Timothy Lyons, LC,
who works in San Jose, California.
Although the three days of retreat
are in silence, there is time for friendship and relaxation
before and after.

The daily schedule included a concelebrated Mass, directed
meditations with time for private prayer, Stations of the Cross,
Eucharistic Adoration, as well as an opportunity for spiritual guidance
and the sacrament of reconciliation.
Some of those who attended chose
to stay an extra day for a guided tour of
San Francisco Bay with some of the Legionaries.
“This retreat is
great,” said Fr. Matt Blank from the diocese of Sacramento.
“The setting is beautiful, with a really good schedule. There´s
a good balance of preaching and time for individual prayer
of reflection on the word preached. The meals are wonderful,
including having a Legionary read to the group at meal
time from very edifying material.”
Fr. Paul Waddell from the Archdiocese
of New York and a Regnum Christi member, said, “The
Holy Spirit was really working through Fr Dean. It was
great to be with priests from all over the country.
There are many insights that I will be able to
take with me from these Spiritual Exercises back home to
my ministry. I am grateful for the wonderful work of
the Legionaries of Christ, who are instruments of God’s grace
for so many of us.”
Next year’s retreat is already scheduled
