Thy Kingdom Come!

Rome,  June 30, 2014

To the members and friends Regnum Christi

Very dear fathers, brothers, sisters and friends in Christ,

With a sorrowful yet hope-filled heart, I write to inform you that Fr. Álvaro Corcuera passed away today at 1:35 PM, central time, in the territorial directorate of Mexico City.

He spent the last days of his life surrounded by his Legionary brothers and closest relatives. I had the blessing of being with him for almost a week, though I had to return to Rome on Friday.  I especially remember that on June 20th, when we offered him holy Communion, he said clearly: “What a joy!”  I think that it was with this joy that he went to meet the Lord.   On Thursday, June 26th, we administered the Anointing of the Sick to him and he received it consciously.

Today, at 11:00 AM, central time, Fr. Ricardo Sada performed the recommendation of his soul to God after a Mass in which Frs. Jaime Rodríguez, Rodolfo Mayagoitia, Evaristo Sada, Guillermo Serra and Mario González concelebrated.  Fr. Álvaro’s sisters Francisca, Guadalupe and Susana were also present.

People will be able to pay their final respects in the chapel of the Anáhuac University tomorrow.  He will be buried in the cemetery Panteon Francés de San Joaquín in Mexico City.  The funeral schedule will be announced later.

I encourage everyone to offer Masses and prayers to entrust his soul to God, and to give thanks for the life of the father, brother and friend that Fr. Álvaro has been to us as our General Director during the nine most difficult years of our history. In the midst of our sorrow, we can truly say that he has fought the good fight, he has run the race and has kept the faith. Now a hard-earned crown awaits him, like St. Paul (cf. 2 Tim 4:8).
Let us pray as well for his family and relatives, that the Lord grant them hope and peace in the faith that Christ has triumphed over evil and death.

I would like to thank the entire Regnum Christi family for all your prayers and signs of affection while Fr. Álvaro was sick. He was certainly well-loved by all. I especially want to thank all those who assisted and accompanied Fr. Álvaro in government and those who have cared for him with such dedication and true charity throughout his long illness.

Let us pray for one another, that we may all participate in that union with God that we desire the Lord to grant Fr. Álvaro.  Let us also pray for all the Regnum Christi members who are sick and suffering, as well as their relatives and friends.

Lord, please grant Fr. Álvaro eternal rest.  May perpetual light shine upon him.  May he rest in peace!

Yours in Christ,
Fr. Eduardo Robles Gil, LC
