Young men of high school and college age and their dads are invited to join Fr. Michael Mitchell, LC, on a weeklong mission to Mexico this summer.  The men will be working in the Mayan village of Nuevo Durango, two hours south of Cancun from June 16-23, 2013.

Fr. Michael just returned from a similar mission in March last month with a group of young men from the University of Iowa and boys from Mt. Michael High School in Omaha, Nebraska.  More than 60 young men helped build three homes for needy families there located in the hills outside of the city of Puebla.

“These guys worked hard and used their spring break very generously,” said Fr. Michael. “They all came home with their arms full of good works and found a true happiness in giving of themselves.  Mission trips always change one’s outlook on life.”

with four children each.  “Two of the husbands had passed away leaving the mothers all alone,” said Fr. Michael. “We were able to help them by building each of them a small, two-bedroom home that will now give them a solid roof over their head and a clean place to live.”

According to Father, the most difficult part was waiting for the water to be brought back and forth for mixing the building cement.  “It was transported by donkey from a mile away!” he said.

“All in all, the missions went very well,” he added, encouraging those interested in joining him for June to contact him at mmitchell@legionaries.org. Click here for a flyer on the June mission.

In the jungle villages of Cancun, the ongoing building projects include repairs to a church, painting rooms in the town Missionary Center, building CCD classrooms, restroom facilities, and a soccer field.

The cost for the mission is $450, covering a participant’s food (simple, healthy meals brought in from Cancun) lodging at the Mission Youth Center in Nuevo Durango, local land transportation, missionary kits and construction materials.

Besides the building projects, there will be daily Mass, spiritual talks, activities with the children and townspeople, a day trip to the Mayan ruins and beach, and door-to-door evangelizing.
