“It’s a book sure to renew and inspire the way
you reach out to the youth in your life, whether
children, students or players on a team,” said Brother Lucio
ECyD is an international Catholic
association of youth who participate in programs or activities that
mark their Christian way of life and encourage them to
build a lasting friendship with Christ and be his apostle.
It is the way Regnum Christi seeks to respond to
the needs of today’s youth.
“ECyD proposes a
journey of Experiences, Convictions and [your] Decisions for any teen
who wants to live these years of life to the
fullest,” said Br. Lucio.
With the intention of
renewing the Legion of Christ’s and Regnum Christi’s work with
young people, a group of Legionary priests, consecrated person and
lay members experienced in adolescent psychology and youth ministry formed
a commission in Madrid, Spain in 2009 and gathered the
collective experience of the RC family to produce an organized
framework for youth work. The ECyD Book was born. Over
the last three years, mentors from all over the world
have come to Madrid, Spain to receive ongoing formation in
mentoring teens using the ECyD Book.
book presents 40 years of experience mentoring teens within the
Legion of Christ and Regnum Christi charism and youth apostolates. One of the highlights of the book is
the presentation of the “Ten Needs of Adolescents,” a summary
of the existential questions of hundreds of adolescents from more
than 20 countries.
An adolescent’s greatest need is
to “acquire the ability to understand, explain and define themselves
as an individual, beginning to think, feel and decide on
their own,” according to the ECyD Book. The
book highlights the importance of the mentor in awakening in
teens a “search for God and their identity.”
It also states that effective youth ministry should help teens
answer their questions and accompany them throughout their adolescence.
