Consecrated women gather for in-depth training in spiritual direction

Cherry Blossoms in DC

Regnum Christi consecrated woman Heidi Seubert shares her reflection about gathering with 44 other consecrated “sisters” for in depth training in the task of spiritual direction for souls.

Spring in Bethesda, Maryland, an area renowned for its beautiful blossoms, was an appropriate time to gather.  From April 28 to May 3, 2013, we came together, united in a common calling of service, of mission, of loving our Lord with all our hearts, minds and wills.

In his epistle to the Philippians, St. Paul says, "Forgetting what lies behind, but straining forward to what lies ahead, I continue my pursuit toward the goal, the prize of God´s upward calling in Christ Jesus."  This is why we gathered, to pursue our calling, to pursue the love that brought us to follow Christ.  And that means going forward in His name.

Our backgrounds, experiences, strengths and qualifications vary, and this added to the dynamics of the meeting to dive more deeply into the vast topic of spiritual direction.  To fortify our knowledge and proficiency, this second in a five-part series of conferences looked in-depth at working with the realities of the “person,” including

topics such as:  fatherhood and its effects on family; marriage and sexual ethics; distinguishing elements between depression or “the dark night of the soul”; anger and forgiveness; working with qualified therapists; the nature and dynamics of addictions; and factors affecting a person’s spiritual growth.

The presenters included experts like Dr. Paul Vitz, PhD; Sr. Mary Clare Smith, SND, PhD; Fr. John Hopkins LC; and Lisa Klewicki, PhD.  They helped us to gaze into the vast arrays of the possibilities of teamwork with professionals, and to ask questions.

Above all, we were united in our daily prayer and celebration of the Eucharist, and in doing what we so enjoy -- “chatting” between conferences, during meals, and at other moments, sharing our common vocation of a life, consecrated to the service of God and to those he entrusts to our prayers and ministries. Not only did we renew our love, esteem, appreciation and friendship for each other during this meaningful time, but we were also reminded of the vast need presented by our world and the importance of being prepared in every way possible.

It is indeed springtime: a time of hope; a time of looking both inward for strength and forward at the path

before us; a time to let the Holy Spirit guide and lead; and a time to do our part to continue to prepare ourselves for the service of the Church in the new evangelization.  This comment from Fr. John Hopkins summed up well the meaning of our gathering.  “This is about the work of the Holy Spirit. This is about letting him act. This is about trusting and listening to him, the Divine Guest of your souls.”

Amen! Come Holy Spirit!
