Teamwork in the Family
Detroit locality organizes Mass, Eucharistic Adoration and fellowship event in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus feast day June 7, 2013

The Mass was celebrated by Fr. Lorenzo Gomez LC, with five other Legionary priests concelebrating.

“We do not want the events we will live to be limited to meetings that study and approve the text of the Constitutions or Statutes, or to be limited to a cursory review of our way of life. We feel an appropriate spiritual preparation is also necessary, a personal and community journey to “renew our love,” and we want to begin it with the celebration of the solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus…The renewal of the Legion and Regnum Christi in holiness depends upon our capacity of living up to the truth in our own lives and of being open to embracing the grace of conversion to the Heart of Jesus.” (May 28, 2013 letter to the members of Regnum Christi and the Legion of Christ from Fr Sylvester Heereman LC, vicar general of the Legion, and the heads of the RC consecrated women and men, respectively, Gloria Rodríguez and Jorge López.)

In response to this letter, the Detroit, Michigan, area Regnum Christi family gathered in the chapel at the Boys’ School of Everest Academy in Clarkston, Michigan for a concelebrated Mass, Eucharistic Adoration and fellowship in honor of the feast of the Sacred Heart June 7, 2013.

In a June 2, 2013 email from Fr.
Sacred Heart Mass in Detroit
Seventy-five people attended the Mass in celebration of the feast of the Sacred Heart.
Michael Brisson LC to the local coordinators of apostolate and their locality teams, he suggested one way localities could follow the recommendations of Fr. Sylvester and prepare spiritually for the upcoming 2014 General Chapter and related meetings was to hold a concelebrated Mass on the Sacred Heart feast day, inviting all the Legionaries, consecrated men and women, and first and second degree RC members to participate.

Though they had only a few days to organize an event, the Detroit family took on the invitation.  “Fr. Aaron (Smith – the Detroit locality LCA) responded by sending an email out to all of us asking for our help to organize,” said RC consecrated woman April Pickett, who put together a flyer to promote the event via email and Facebook. The team quickly planned a Mass, Eucharistic Adoration and a fellowship brunch to follow at Everest Academy.

Fr. Lorenzo Gomez LC celebrated the Mass, which was concelebrated by Fr. Aaron, Fr. Thomas Flynn LC, Fr. John Curran LC, Fr. Daniel Pajerski LC and Fr. Joseph Gillespie LC. Brothers Joshua Thompson and Adam Zettel assisted. Music was provided by RC consecrated woman Sarah Lang. Lucia Westrick, a member of the Immaculate Conception Program and student at Everest Collegiate Girls’ High School, and Mike Nalepa, executive director of Everest, served as lectors.

Following the Mass, RC consecrated woman Jana Crea gave a reflection during Eucharistic Adoration. She spoke about why Jesus reveals his Sacred Heart to us. “It shows Jesus’ vulnerability,” she said. “Just like He is here in the Eucharist. Jesus is …offering us His heart. He is OK being vulnerable with us.Are we OK being vulnerable with Him?”

Marge Mancuso, head of the Detroit locality RC Women’s Section, called the entire experience “amazing.”

“We had 75 people attend Mass,” she said. “Many stayed for the Eucharistic Adoration and confession. Then we had 55 for brunch afterwards.”

"See what a team is capable of in basically 24 hours!" said Fr. Aaron.
