Twenty-three Legionaries of Christ were ordained to the transitional deaconate
Saturday, June 29, 2013, at the Legion’s Center of Higher
Studies in Rome. Eight young men are from the United
States and one from Canada.
Among those ordained were Deacon
Frederick Keiser, from Kansas, and Deacon Matthew Schmitz, from Minnesota,
who offer catechesis through videos on the YouTube channel “thebrothersinblack.” Deacon Matthew Schneider, from Canada, publishes a blog called
22Catholic.com on the New Evangelization.
Deacon Keiser shared this
reflection about the ceremony: “It was like everyone, the whole
Church, was lifting us up in prayer. It was amazing,
Archbishop Renato Boccardo of Spoleto-Norcia ordained them. His homily
could be summarized with the following quote: “God has chosen
you and now, by means of this sacrament, he is
about to make you instruments and signs of his love
among men and women.”
Besides the deacons ordained on June 29,
five more had been ordained earlier in June in Mexico
and France. Another three are slated to be ordained in
Brazil in August.
In December, 2013, these transitional deacons will
be ordained priests by Cardinal Velasio De Paolis, Pontifical Delegate
of the Legion of Christ and Regnum Christi. This generation
is projected to have 31 new priests in all.
