|Fr. Deomar De Guedes LC|
Pontifical Delegate Cardinal Velasio De Paolis has accepted the resignation
of Fr. Deomar De Guedes LC from the General Council.
Fr. De Guedes said he resigned from the Council because
he did not have the necessary energy to confront the
challenges of the position. He had asked the Pontifical Delegate
to be exclaustrated from the Legion, but Cardinal De Paolis
granted him permission to resign “extra domum,” so Fr. De
Guedes will reside outside of the community for one year.
The Cardinal asked Fr. De Guedes to reevaluate his situation
during that year in light of the new superiors who
will be elected in the next General Chapter.
Guedes was named to the Legion General Council in February, 2012.
Ordinarily the Council is made up of six members. Because
the Legion of Christ’s General Chapter will begin on January
8, 2014, and six new counselors will be elected at
that time, Fr. De Guedes will not be replaced at
Fr. Sylvester Heereman LC, the acting general director of
the Legion, said he respects Fr. De Guedes’ decision, and
is grateful for his active collaboration in the process of
renewing the Legion of Christ.
Following is a letter from the
Pontifical Delegate to the movement, and the text of the
resignation letter from Fr. De Guedes.

Rome, November 7, 2013
Dear brothers and sisters in the
Legion of Christ and Regnum Christi,
With these lines I present
the letter with which Fr. Deomar De Guedes submits his
resignation from the General Council and asks for time to
reflect and pray. You have all had opportunities to get
to know Fr. Deomar, especially in his ministry as territorial
director of Spain, as well as during his ministry in
Mexico, Brazil and Argentina.
As General Councilor of the Legion, Fr.
Deomar has dedicated himself generously, contributing to the renewal process
of the Congregation. Now he says that he no longer
has the energy necessary to carry out this task responsibly
and requests a period of reflection.
After a fraternal conversation
with Fr. Deomar, and after having consulted my advisers and
the members of the General Council of the Congregation, sadly
and admittedly with some perplexity, I have decided to accept
his resignation from his post as General Councilor. It also
seemed opportune to grant him this period of reflection, with
permission to be absent from his community for one year.
we thank Fr. Deomar for his service and his valuable
contribution let us assure him of a place in our
prayers. May the Lord help us to continue to advance
along the path of renewal of the Legion and the
Regnum Christi Movement in union of hearts and mutual trust.
I send my blessing to all, and I ask one
and all to remember me in their prayers.

To all Legionaries and Regnum Christi
Dear friends in Christ,
At the request of Cardinal Velasio
De Paolis, I am sending this letter to convey a
personal decision that I have made, guided by the Lord’s
As you know, in January 2012 His Eminence invited
me to be part of the general council of the
Legion, following the consultation made in late 2011 in which
many of you showed your confidence in me. I take
this opportunity to thank the Cardinal and his personal councilors
for the trust they placed in me.
In March of 2012
I began this mission, to which I have passionately given
my whole self in order to contribute constructively to the
challenge of achieving the authentic and profound renewal of the
Legion of Christ and Regnum Christi which Popes Benedict XVI
and Francis have asked for.
Today, after long and deep reflection,
starting with the Lectio Divina which I used to seek
answers, and supported by my spiritual director, I acknowledge and
accept that I no longer have the strength to continue
in this position.
Following the example of Pope emeritus Benedict XVI,
I see that the best thing for the Legion at
this time is that I withdraw from this process. I
am able to do this with peace now because all
my work is done and what lies ahead are only
the practical aspects of organizing the general chapter.
I requested three
years of exclaustration in order to serenely discern whether I
should stay in the Legion. Cardinal Velasio De Paolis, painfully,
but with great understanding and kindness, allowed me a year
of extra domum [permission to live outside a Legionary community]
in order to regain strength and finish this personal discernment.
will move to the Archdiocese of Brasilia , Brazil, where
the Archbishop Sergio da Rocha and his priests will receive
me in the coming days.
I would like to take this
opportunity to thank all my brother Legionaries , especially those
who have supported me in this vital mission, as well
as all the great friends I have made here who
have given me their unconditional support, affection and esteem until
the last moment.
I also thank the dedicated consecrated men of
Regnum Christi to whom I extend an affectionate greeting full
of gratitude and esteem. You know my appreciation for your
vocation and Gospel spirit.
My gratitude also goes out to my
consecrated sisters whom I admire and from whom I have
always received so much friendship and the comfort of their
Finally, I want to thank all lay members of
Regnum Christi with whom I have shared my life over
these past 21 years of service to Christ in the
I will continue to keep the renewal process of the
Movement and of the Legion in my prayers, especially the
general assemblies and the general chapter. I ask all of
you for your prayers in this new stage of my
