On May 19, 2014, Br. Joseph Poulin, LC, was ordained
to the transitional deaconate in his home diocese of San
The ordination took place in the parish St.
Catherine of Alexandria in Temeluca, California, where he grew up.
The main celebrant was Bishop Rutilio del Riego, auxiliary Bishop
of the Diocese of San Bernardino. Diocesan priests and deacons
from the area concelebrated.
Legionary priests and brothers of the communities
of Los Angeles and San Jose attended the ordination. During
his homily, Bishop Rutilio reflected on the call for the
diaconate, which is a sign of the love of God
for the Church and the whole world. He also mentioned
that as a Legionary, Deacon Joseph is called to be
a missionary and to imitate Christ is a very special

At the end of Mass, Deacon Joseph’s father spoke on
behalf of his family. He shared the vocational story of
his son, which started when they both used to go
together to nocturnal Eucharistic Adoration at a nearby parish.
was born in July 4, 1982. After studying a few
years in Immaculate Conception Apostolic School in New Hampshire, he
joined the novitiate of the Legionaries of Christ in 2000.
He then was sent to Salamanca, Spain, where he finished
his novitiate and studied humanities. He studied Philosophy and Theology
in Rome and did his apostolic internship in Buenos Aires,
Argentina, with the local Bishop being Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio (currently

Deacon Joseph’s priestly ordination is set for December 13,
2014 in Rome.
