Regnum Christi was founded in New Zealand in 1991 when
Mr. Michael Devereux and his wife Marie, from Dunedin, got
incorporated into Regnum Christi in Rome. Upon their return, they
gathered a group of couples who wanted to grow in
their faith. Fr Anthony Bannon and other Legionary priests visited
on a yearly basis, giving retreats and helping the new
Regnum Christi members to start living out their apostolic vocation.
1997, several couples from Auckland met the Legionaries and Regnum
Christi consecrated women at a Eucharistic Convention. The Dunedin section
also contacted them, and soon a section was born in
that city as well.
For its small size, New Zealand has
contributed many coworkers and vocations to the Legion and
the Regnum Christi Movement. The coworkers who return home after
giving their year (or years) have enriched their local parishes
with their enthusiasm and commitment to their faith.
Dunedin and Auckland, several apostolates have taken root over the
past years, including K4J, ConQuest, Challenge, CL (Christian Life), Familia,
book clubs, men´s and women´s encounters, and a radio station
in Dunedin started by Terri Cleary. The radio show airs
for one hour each Sunday, mixing catechesis and interviews on
local and international events.

In addition to the Regnum Christi apostolates,
the New Zealand sections have also engaged in the life
of their parishes. The Auckland section has hosted the bishop
of Auckland for a men’s breakfast and has also sponsored
“Priest Appreciation” evenings for the priests of the diocese with
over 60 priests attending an evening in their honor with
dinner, musical entertainment, and fellowship.
Many Regnum Christi members in
New Zealand also contribute to parish, diocesan, and national apostolates
such as “6pence,” the promotion of Catholic music to equip
youth to participate in liturgical life in the parish, week-long
summer schools for youth, baptism programs, first communion programs, youth
groups, and Eucharistic adoration.
