The Legion of Christ arrived to Spain in 1946 to form its religious in the University of Comillas in Santander. With the passage of time, that first step into Spain has expanded into three formation centers for Legionary religious, a university (Francisco de Vitoria University) in Madrid, and schools in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Seville. The Movement’s apostolates also include various youth clubs and Regnum Christi centers in some of the country’s main cities.

A young priest and 32 Mexican teenagers arrived to Comillas (Santander) on September 28 of 1946. They were the first members of a new congregation that brought a handful of novices (the older boys) and apostolic boys (minor seminarians) to Spain to be formed at the prestigious Pontifical University of Comillas. The goal was to pursue a solid intellectual formation that would prepare them for the challenges that the Church would face in the years to come. This choice held two advantages: in Europe, they would be closer to Rome and to the Holy Father; and in Spain, the boys would have no trouble understanding the language.

The Legionaries of Christ studied in Comillas until the end of the 1950s. Those four years marked a stage of maturation and growth for the young congregation. From 1950 onward, with the foundation of the house in Rome, only the apostolic stayed in Spain, first in Cobreces and then in Ontaneda (a province of Santander) from October of 1952 onward. The new house in Ontaneda had been an old spa hotel known for its thermal springs. After renting for a while, the young congregation bought the property in 1954. It became their first property in Spain.

In 1958, the Legion of Christ opened its second house in Spain: the novitiate and center for humanistic studies of Salamanca. In February of 1965, Father Alfredo Torres, LC arrived to Madrid to start the apostolates of the Legion in Spain and to form the first Regnum Christi groups. From then on, the Legion of Christ and Regnum Christi have grown and taken root in this country, dedicating themselves particularly –but not exclusively—to education. They direct two schools in Barcelona: the Santa Isabel School and the Highlands School. They also direct three schools in Madrid: Everest, Highlands, and Virgen del Bosque (Our Lady of the Woods). There is another Highlands School in Seville, and a Cumbres School in Valencia. They also have a university in Madrid, Francisco de Vitoria University.
