Pozuelo de Alarcón (Spain), June 18, 2005. Francisco de
Vitoria University’s Robert Schuman Institute of European Studies recently organized
a course on “The European Union in the World,” in
collaboration with Ayuntamiento de Patones de Arriba (Madrid).
The course consisted
in a four-day meeting between university professors, academics, and European
political personalities to analyze the exterior element of the EU
in light of the significant changes that have been taking
place in recent years.
The conferences and round tables dealt with
such themes as “unity in diversity,” “Europe as a cradle
of culture,” and “the phenomenon of immigration,” as well as
issues related to the politics of security and international relations.
Those
participating included, among others, José María Gil-Robles, President of the
European International Movement and former President of the European Parliament;
Carlos Carnero, Deputy in the European Union and Member of
the Convention for the Future of Europe; Francisca Sauquillo, president
of the Movement for Peace, Disarmament, and Freedom; the Ambassadors
of Turkey, Croatia, and Macedonia (candidate nations); and several others
holding high responsibilities in the EU. In representation of the
Spanish government, Juan Arístegui, from the Ministry of External Affairs’
Secretariat of State for the EU, gave the closing conference.
