A great number of green iguanas, those reptiles that naturally
inhabit the area above the trees of the tropical jungles
of Mexico, Peru and Brazil, will find a home in
the Integral Center for the Development and Investigation of Iguanas,
a Regnum Christi project based in the State of Guerrero
(Mexico). This project is a part of the Integral Center
for Community Development which the Legion of Christ´s Anáhuac Social
Foundation recently started up as a way of providing housing
to those who were left homeless by Hurricane Pauline which
assaulted the coasts of Acapulco
in 1997.
The goal of this
project is to conserve the ecosystem and the natural habitat
of the various tropical species in the area, among them
the green iguana. As an immediate "side effect", the nearby
communities will be blessed with an increased market of job
opportunities. The organization will be directed by a team of
55 members who will coordinate these initiatives in 21 townships,
assisting 351 communities, rural and native alike.
The center will be
located in the Acapulco metropolitan area. Its main activities
will include investigation, conservation, commercialization, the exhibition of iguanas, eco-tourism,
as well as social and community development. In the
future, twenty public farms and 200 family farms will be
constructed. In the area of technical assistance, we will be
offering guidance and aid in the distribution of livestock while
guaranteeing them the sale of their production.
