Mexico, August 13, 2008. Paola Espinosa and Tatiana Ortiz, students
at the Legion’s Anáhuac University in the south of
Mexico City, set an exciting new precedent for Mexico by
winning the bronze medal in the Beijing Olympics. Their sport:
synchronized diving.
A few hours after this historic win, Tatiana Ortiz
sent a message to the rector of the university, Dr. Javier Vargas, and to Father Jaime Bordons, LC, the
vice rector of integral formation, thanking them for the support
of the entire Anahuac University community:
“Thank you very much
for all of your prayers. They definitely got to us
and gave us strength to face a competition as difficult
as the one we just had. We are very hapy
with the results, and glad to make our school and
our nation proud. Thanks again, and don’t forget that this
medal is also for the Anahuac Family that never stopped
helping us from afar. Thank you very much, and we’ll
see each other soon.”
The competition to win the bronze medal
in synchronized diving from a 10-meter platform reached a surprising
conclusion. The gold medal went to China, and the competition
for the silver and bronze medals fell to the athletic

powerhouses of the United States, Australia, Germany, Canada, Korea, Great
Britain, and Mexico.
In the first two dives, which were standardized
jumps, the Mexican divers from Anahuac University started out very
far behind, in the eighth and last place. But by
the third jump, which was their own choreographed dive, they
made an amazing comeback and ended up on the medalists’
platform. With this great performance, they won the bronze medal
and the Mexican flag unfurled for the first time over
the Beijing Olympics.
Paola and Tatiana will be competing
individually on August 20 and 21, as well as fellow
diver and Anahuac student Rommel Pacheco, who will compete on
August 22 and 23.
The Anahuac family and Regnum
Christi members worldwide would like to congratulate Paola, Tatiana, and
all Olympic student-athletes who incarnate the spirit and formative ideal
of the Anahuac University network of schools.
