Smithfield, Rhode Island -- A 12-year-old girl, Daniela Heredia, who
was attending an ECyD convention at Mater Ecclesiae College in Greenville, Rhode
Island, was killed in an accident yesterday afternoon (Sunday, July 22,
2012).
She was one of eight girls from
Guatemala who had arrived Saturday, July 21, to attend the
New England Regional ECyD convention, hosted by Mater Ecclesiae College.
The girls had gone into the
town of Smithfield, about a mile from the college, to
do some shopping. They were walking on the
sidewalk of Rt. 44 when the accident happened.
According to local press reports, a black Honda Accord
driven by an elderly man apparently jumped the sidewalk where
the girls were.
Three girls were
involved, and two have been released from the hospital with
only minor injuries. The chaperone walking with the
girls, Ana Paola Gonzalez, a Regnum Christi consecrated woman, stayed
with the injured girls until the emergency crew arrived and
traveled with them to the hospital.
Smithfield police are still investigating the accident, and there is
no word on whether any charges will be filed against
the driver.
“We are waiting for the arrival of
her family, and our thoughts and prayers go out to
them,” said the camp director and Regnum Christi consecrated woman
Renee Pomarico. “We ask all Regnum Christi members to keep
Daniela and her family, all the girls who were involved,
and the driver of the car, in your prayers.”
