The Legionaries of Christ in Holland.

Three Legionary priests are currently working in the Netherlands at the service of the bishop of Roermond. Their mission places them in the parishes of the Roermond diocese. One of them also serves as a spiritual director in the diocesan seminary of Haarlem (next to Amsterdam).

History
In the summer of 1988, Pope John Paul II received an urgent petition to send priests to Holland. From the 1960s onward, this country had suffered a religious crisis, and in the following decades, there was both a gradual secularization in society and also an enormous decrease in the number of religious and priestly vocations. The hope of a new evangelization was severely limited by the scarcity of priests. And so it was that the Legionaries sent one priest and one religous to Holland in the fall of 1988.

The diocese where they were established was Roermond, in the southeast part of the country near the border with Belgium and Germany. This was an area of great cultural richness while its economy was based on the carbon mines. When the mines were closed, the zone suffered a socioeconomic crisis whose consequences can still be seen today.

Three Legionaries work as parish priests in this zone. Father Carl Kuss (American) was ordained in 1994 and has carried out his mission in Holland ever since. In 2006, Father Vincent McMahon (Irish), already a pastor in Roermond, was appointed spiritual director of the seminary of the Haarlem diocese. The third priest, Father Paul Hubert, has worked in Holland since January of 2007. The three priests frequently celebrate Mass in English in the Basilica of Our Lady in the city of Maastricht. A Dutch priest, Father Anton Vogelsang, LC, works as a spiritual director in Anahuac University in the south section of Mexico City.
