Te Deum

You are God: we praise you;

you are the Lord: we acclaim you;

you are the eternal Father:

all creation worships you.

To you all angels, all the powers of heaven,

cherubim and seraphim, sing in endless praise:

Holy, holy, holy,

Lord God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

The glorious company of apostles praise you,

the noble fellowship of prophets praise you,

the white robed army of martyrs praise you.

Throughout the world

the holy Church acclaims you:

Father, of majesty unbounded,

your true and only Son, worthy of all worship,

and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide.

You, Christ, are the King of glory,

the eternal Son of the Father.

When you became man to set us free

you did not spurn the Virgin’s womb.

You overcame the sting of death,

and opened the Kingdom of heaven to all believers.

You are seated at God’s right hand in glory.

We believe that you will come, and be our judge.

Come then, Lord, and help your people,

bought with the price of your own blood,

and bring us with your saints to glory everlasting.

Save your people, Lord,

and bless your inheritance.

Govern and uphold them now and always.

Day by day we bless you.

We praise your name for ever.

Keep us today, Lord, from all sin.

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy.

Lord, show us your love and mercy,

for we put our trust in you.

In you, Lord, is our hope:

and we shall never hope in vain.

V/ Lord, hear my prayer

R/ and let my cry reach you.

Lord, God almighty, you have brought us safely to the beginning of this day. Defend us today by your mighty power, that we may not fall into any sin, but that all our words may so proceed and all our thoughts and actions be so directed, as to be always just in your sight. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hymn to the Holy Spirit (Veni Creátor)

Creating Spirit, mighty Lord,

find home within our heart and mind.

With warmth and power and gentleness

in grace refashion all mankind.

O Comforter of all who toil,

gift from the fountainhead of light,

O Spirit of all love and fire,

anointing chrism of all might.

O molder of our freedom strong

and gentle finger of God’s hand,

come lead our words within the paths

that Wisdom in your love has planned.

Alert our senses, touch our hearts,

and fire us with your gift of love,

that proud and fallen, weak and blind,

your light may lead us from above.

Drive far from us the foe we dread

and grant us your true peace instead;

so shall we not, with you for guide,

turn from the path of life aside.

Oh, may your grace on us bestow

the Father and the Son to know,

and you, through endless times confessed,

of both the eternal Spirit blest.

All glory to the Father be,

and to the risen Son;

the same to you, O Paraclete,

while endless ages run. Amen.

Sequence of the Holy Spirit

Come, Holy Spirit, and from heaven

Direct on man the rays of your light.

Come, Father of the poor,

Come, giver of God’s gift.

Come, light of men’s hearts.

Kindly Advocate,

In your gracious visits to man’s soul,

You bring relief and consolation.

If it is weary with toil, you bring it ease;

In the heat of temptation, your grace cools it;

If sorrowful, your words console it.

Light most blessed,

Shine on the hearts of your faithful –

Even in their darkest corners;

For without your aid man can do nothing,

And everything is sinful.

Wash clean the sinful soul,

Rain down your grace on the parched soul

And heal the injured soul.

Soften the hard heart,

Cherish and warm the icecold heart,

And give direction to the wayward.

Give your seven holy gifts to your faithful,

For their trust is in you.

Give them reward for their virtuous acts,

Give them a death that ensures salvation,

And give them unending bliss. Amen.

Father in heaven, we call upon your Son, the center, standard, and example of our Christian life. Grant our humble request: Enable us to keep growing in our interior understanding of the mystery of Christ in order to live it to the full. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Act of Faith

My God, I firmly believe that you are one God in three divine Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

I believe that your divine Son became man and died for our sins, and that he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe these and all the truths that the holy Catholic Church teaches, because you revealed them, who can neither deceive nor be deceived.

In accord with this faith I want to live the rest of my life. Lord, increase my faith.

Above all I give you my heart so in me you can love your Father and all people.

I give you my whole self so you can grow in me, till it is you who live and work and pray in me. Amen.

Litany of Humility

Jesus, meek and humble of heart! Hear me!

From the desire of being esteemed, Lord Jesus, free me!

From the desire of being loved,

From the desire of being acclaimed,

From the desire of being honored,

From the desire of being praised,

From the desire of being preferred,

From the desire of being consulted,

From the desire of being approved,

From the desire of being valued,

From the fear of being humiliated, Lord Jesus, free me!

From the fear of being despised,

From the fear of being dismissed,

From the fear of being rejected,

From the fear of being defamed,

From the fear of being forgotten,

From the fear of being ridiculed,

From the fear of being wronged,

From the fear of being suspected,

From resenting  that  my  opinion  is  not  followed.

That others:

will be loved more than I, Lord Jesus, make this my prayer!

will be esteemed more than I,

will increase in the opinion of the world while I diminish,

will be chosen while I am set aside,

will be praised while I am overlooked,

will be preferred to me in everything.

V/ Let us pray:  Lord Jesus, though you were God, you humbled yourself to the extreme of dying on a cross, to set an enduring example to the shame of my arrogance and vanity. Help me to learn your example and put it into practice so that, by humbling myself in accordance with my lowliness here on earth, you can lift me up to rejoice in you forever in heaven.

R/ Amen.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit, inspire in me

what I should think,

what I should say,

what I should leave unsaid,

what I should write,

what I should do

and how I should act

to bring about the good of souls,

the fulfillment of my mission

and the triumph of the Kingdom of Christ.

Miserere (Psalm 51)

Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness,

in your great tenderness wipe away my faults;

wash me clean of my guilt,

purify me from my sin.

For I am well aware of my faults,

I have my sin constantly in mind,

having sinned against none other than you,

having done what you regard as wrong.

You are just when you pass sentence on me,

blameless when you give judgement.

You know I was born guilty,

a sinner from the moment of conception.

Yet, since you love sincerity of heart,

teach me the secrets of wisdom.

Purify me with hyssop until I am clean;

wash me until I am whiter than snow.

Instill some joy and gladness into me,

put into me a new and constant spirit,

do not banish me from your presence,

do not deprive me of your holy spirit.

Be my savior again, renew my joy, keep my spirit steady and willing;

and I shall teach transgressors the way to you,

and to you the sinners will return.

Save me from death, God my savior, and my tongue will acclaim your righteousness;

Lord, open my lips,

and my mouth will speak out your praise.

Sacrifice gives you no pleasure, Were I to offer holocaust, you would not have it.

My sacrifice is this broken spirit,

You will not scorn this crushed and broken heart.

Show your favor graciously to Zion.

Rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

Then there will be proper sacrifice to please you

— holocaust and whole oblation —

and young bulls to be offered on your altar.

A Family Prayer Before Reading the Word of God

Our Father and Lord, as night falls and the long day calls people home to spend quiet time together as a family, we enter into the silence of our hearts to listen to your word.

We need to hear you; we need to listen to you. We are weary of so many false and too human messages. We now take your Scriptures to pray together as a family, because it does us good to recall your salvation history and listen to the Good News of your Kingdom.

Grant us your light so we can grasp your message in our hearts. We know you are the Way,

the Truth and the Life; help us to understand what this means. Be the first and last word in this home. Speak, Lord, for your servants are listening. Amen.

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his name.

He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Prayers to the Blessed Virgin

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. Mother of the Word incarnate, do not despise my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Under your Protection

Under your protection we take refuge, holy Mother of God. Do not disregard our prayer in our need, but save us from all danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Consecration to the Blessed Virgin

Mary, my Queen and Mother, I offer myself entirely to you. As an expression of my devotion, I consecrate to you, today, my eyes, my ears, my tongue, my heart – in a word: my entire being. Since I am utterly yours, dear Mother, keep and defend me as your very own.

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander the earth seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Apostle’s Prayer

Lord, by your grace we belong to your Church and share in her mission to save all people. Help us to know you better, follow you more closely, and make you known to everyone. Give us the courage and enthusiasm to befriend all those we meet and lead them to you. Never let us offend you by anything we say or do. Keep us close to you and make us strong and active members of your Church. Strengthen your life in us and make it grow so that we will do everything with you and for you. Amen.

Parents’ Prayer for Vocations to Priesthood and Consecrated Life

Lord Jesus, we offer you our children, and consecrate them to you.

You, the all-powerful Creator, gave them to us; with a parent’s love, we give them back to you. Keep them free from all sin, confirm them in your grace and enable them, Lord, to serve you for the rest of their lives as priests or consecrated persons. Fill us with your love, so we can bear their leaving in silence. Though it is hard to let them go, call our children to love and serve you. Give them a thirst for souls out of love for you. From our arms, where they first learned to love you, may their guardian angels guide them as priests to your altars, as missionaries to the missions, as consecrated persons to your love, as apostles to souls in need and as saints to heaven. Amen.

Prayer for My Children’s Vocations

Lord, I pray to you for my children’s vocations. Grant them the grace to discover and accept according to your will whatever path you have chosen for each one of them. Help them to be docile and generous in giving themselves to their calling and may they faithfully carry out the duties it will demand of them.

And if, in your infinite goodness, you choose to call them to serve you, form in me, Lord, a generous and willing heart, that will appreciate in all their greatness the matchless gifts of the priesthood and consecrated life. Lord, give me the joy and humility gratefully to acknowledge such a fruitful blessing. Amen.

Prayer for the Laity

Lord God, you willed the power of the Gospel to act as a leaven in the world and you called the lay faithful to live out our lives amid temporal affairs. Let   us be so on fire with Christian spirit that as we engage in our role in the world we will build and proclaim your Kingdom. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Spouses’ Prayer

Father, all-powerful and ever-living God, we thank you and bless your holy Name, for you created man and woman to be a help and support for each other. Remember us today. Protect us and enable our love to be the mutual gift of self in the image of Christ and the Church. Enlighten and strengthen us for the mission of teaching our children to be authentic Christians and energetic builders of the earthly city. Enable us to grow old together in joy and peace so we can always praise and thank you in our hearts through your Son in the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Wedding Anniversary Prayer

God, Lord of the universe, in the beginning you created man and woman and established the marriage covenant. Bless and strengthen our love so we will always express in our life together the sacrament we celebrated in faith. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Parents’ Prayer

Lord, enlighten our children’s minds so they will find the path you have marked out for them, for your glory and their salvation. Support them with your strength, so that the ideals of your Kingdom will inspire their lives. Give us light so that we, their parents, can help them to recognize their Christian vocation and to follow it generously by cooperating with your inspirations. Amen.

A Son or Daughter’s Prayer

Lord God, you commanded us to honor our father and our mother. Graciously hear my prayer for them. Grant them a long life, and keep them healthy in body and soul. Bless their work and their undertakings. Reward them for all they have done for me. Inspire them to love and practice your holy law. Help me to do all I can for them. And grant that after enjoying their loving care on earth, I will have the joy of living with them for ever in heaven. Amen.

Prayer of the Engaged

Lord, my heart is on fire with love for a person you know and love. You yourself enabled us to meet each other and brought us together. Thank you for this gift, which fills me with deep joy, makes me resemble you – for you are Love – and leads me to understand the value of the life you gave me.

Never let me squander this treasure you have stored in my heart.

Teach me that love means giving myself and can have no part with selfishness; that love is pure and must never become tainted; that love is fruitful and from now on has to create a new way of life for both of us.

Lord, hear my prayer for the one who is waiting for my hand in marriage and is thinking about me, the one who has placed in me all his (her) trust for the future, the one who walks by my side.

Make us worthy of each other. May we truly be a help and example for each other. Help us in our preparation for marriage, with the dignity and responsibility it entails, so that from now on our souls will master our bodies and guide them to express true love. Amen.

Prayer When Expecting a Child

God our Father, we thank you for the wonderful gift that lets us share in your divine fatherhood. Lord, as we await the time of the little one’s birth we ask you to protect this child of ours, still enveloped in mystery, so he or she will be born healthy into the light of the world, and then receive the new birth of baptism. Mother of God, to your motherly heart we entrust our child. Amen.

Prayer for the Sick

Lord, you wanted your Son to bear our weaknesses to reveal the value of illness and patient endurance. Hear, then, the prayers we offer for our sick brothers and sisters. Give all who suffer pain, illness or disease the grace of realizing that your Son has chosen them to be among the ones he called blessed. Make them aware that their sufferings unite them with Christ’s passion to redeem the world. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer Before Going on a Journey

Lord, every place is filled with your presence. Keep me company on this journey, and allow me to reach my destination and return home safe and sound. May this trip become a proclamation of joy to everyone I meet, a message of hope and a witness to Christian life. Amen.

Prayer for the Suffering

Lord God, provident refuge of all who experience suffering, hear our prayer for them. Calm and comfort the sick, the aged and the dying. Give those who care for them wisdom and patience, tact and compassion. Inspire in them the actions that bring relief, the words that give light, and the love that comforts. We entrust to you those whose hearts are discouraged, or who rebel against their suffering; those torn by temptation, tormented by passion, or wounded or abused by the malice of others.

Lord, pour into our hearts your Spirit of love, understanding and self-sacrifice, so that when we meet people who are suffering, we will be able to help them effectively. Enable us to respond to their plea, for that plea is a plea from you. Amen.

Prayer in Life’s Trials and Tribulations

Lord, help us face our tribulations, duties and responsibilities with serene, steadfast courage. With you as our consolation may we in turn be able to comfort our brothers and sisters. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for a Happy Death

God our Father, you made us in your image and handed over your Son to die for us; grant us the grace to remain watchful in prayer, so we will be free from sin when we leave this world, and find eternal rest and joy in the depths of your mercy. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for a Deceased Person

Lord, remember your son (daughter) N., whom you called from this world into your presence. In baptism he (she) died with Christ: May he (she) also share his resurrection, when Christ will raise our mortal bodies and make them like his own in glory. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
